2014 Malbec, Sonoma Valley
Long, warm days led to an outstanding growing and ripening season for the Bordeaux varietals. While we did experience some 90 degree weeks, the vineyards were not overly hot, which allowed the acid in the grapes to soften and produce a wine that will age beautifully. This wine expresses the rich terroir of the vineyard due to the length of hang time the warm weather allowed. The grapes underwent a cold soak for four days and were fermented on their native yeasts. Fermentation included pumpovers twice daily, and the wine remained on the skins for three weeks to achieve body and texture across the palate. Our Malbec was aged in small French and American oak cooperage for 19 months (24% new), followed by bottling in June 2016.
“I really enjoy Malbec due to its versatility in pairing with a variety of foods. I find Malbec to have layers of fruit flavors like one might find in Zinfandel, balanced by some of the texture and tannin one might expect from a Cabernet Sauvignon. When attending dinner at a friend’s house without knowing the menu, a Malbec makes the perfect gift. This wine has international appeal and the ability to pair with a broad range of cuisine.”
